Years turn into wind

Chapter 229 The Enemy Approaches

Chapter 229 The Enemy Approaches

Deep in the mine, there was a dead silence, broken only by the team members' suppressed breathing and the occasional faint echo from afar. Cheng Yuwei advanced in the darkness, her gun pointed forward, taking every step with extreme caution.

"Sister-in-law, is there really no one guarding this exit?" Zhang Qiang asked nervously in a low voice, his voice trembling a little in the empty mine tunnel.

Cheng Yuwei didn't even turn around, but whispered, "They are not as familiar with the mining area as we are, and their main force is still searching in other directions. We just need to be one step faster than them."

However, before he could finish his words, there was a sudden sound of chaotic footsteps and the faint voices of soldiers talking in front of him.

"Oh no, they really set up a sentry!" Li Chao cursed softly, quickly gripped the weapon in his hand, and a trace of panic appeared on his face.

Cheng Yuwei immediately stopped, pulled the two of them to the side wall of the mine tunnel, and gestured to them to keep quiet.

Footsteps approached, and a beam of light flickered deep within the mine. The enemy was clearly searching for any signs of escape, and a hint of impatience lingered in their voices.

"It seems that those deserters are here. Seal the mine tunnel and don't give them a chance to escape." The leading enemy gave a cold order, accompanied by the sound of several gun bolts being loaded.

Cheng Yuwei held her breath and quickly surveyed the surrounding terrain. Aside from a few rusted support beams, there was no cover in the mine tunnel. She gritted her teeth and whispered to the team members around her, "We'll have to force our way in. They don't have many, but we need to move quickly!"

Zhang Qiang and Li Chao looked at each other, nodded, tightened their guns, and prepared to fight.

unexpected events

Cheng Yuwei was just about to give the order when a loud noise suddenly came from deep in the mine, like a vibration caused by a landslide somewhere. The entire mine shook and tiny stone chips fell from above.

"What's going on?" The enemy was obviously startled by the sudden movement and stopped temporarily.

A glint flashed in Cheng Yuwei's eyes, and she immediately seized the opportunity and whispered, "Attack now!"

The three of them quickly leaped out of their hiding place, simultaneously aiming their guns at the enemy ranks and firing. The bullets pierced the air and accurately hit their targets, instantly disrupting the enemy's formation.

"Enemy attack! Cover!" the leading officer shouted, but before the soldiers in the chaos could organize a counterattack, Cheng Yuwei and her team had already rushed to them and used the narrow terrain of the mine tunnel to engage in close combat.

After a few minutes, the enemy was completely defeated and the survivors abandoned their weapons and fled in all directions.

"Well done!" Zhang Qiang excitedly waved his fist, but Cheng Yuwei did not let down her guard. She frowned and said, "This is just an outpost on the periphery. The main force may be on its way. We need to leave quickly."

Breakout through the secret passage

On the other side of the mine tunnel was a long-abandoned secret passage that led to the outskirts of the mining area. Cheng Yuwei and her team quickly entered it, groping their way forward relying on the dim light of their flashlights.

"Sister-in-law, is this road reliable? It feels like there are signs of landslides." Li Chao couldn't help but ask, with a hint of worry in his voice.

"It's the only option." Cheng Yuwei replied calmly, "No one knows about this secret passage. Compared to the main road, it is more likely to help us avoid the enemy."

They carefully made their way through the narrow passage, occasionally making soft noises as they stepped on loose stones. The air grew increasingly humid, carrying a chill from the mountains that made them shiver.

Finally, a faint light appeared ahead, and the exit was right in front of us.

"We're here!" Zhang Qiang exclaimed excitedly, and the others quickened their pace and rushed over. However, when they stepped out of the secret passage, they found that the place they saw was not as safe as they had imagined.

Unexpected ambush

The exit was the outskirts of an empty mining area. Several military trucks were parked not far away, and dozens of enemies were on high alert. It was obvious that a tight net had been set up long ago.

"Damn, they're ambushing us!" Zhang Qiang's face changed and he immediately squatted down to seek cover.

"Calm down!" Cheng Yuwei quickly lowered her voice and scanned the surroundings. She soon noticed a small stream not far away and the dense forest along it.

"Retreat into the woods!" Cheng Yuwei gave the order decisively, and at the same time opened fire first to attract the enemy's attention.

Zhang Qiang and Li Chao followed behind her, relying on scattered cover to fight and retreat. They cooperated tacitly to suppress the enemy's firepower as much as possible.

The enemy obviously did not expect the reaction of several people to be so quick, and was unable to form a siege for a while.

Life and death

At the creek, Cheng Yuwei and her team quickly jumped into the water, using the dense trees as cover to continue their advance. The gunfire behind them was gradually drowned out by the sound of the creek, but Cheng Yuwei knew this was only a temporary respite.

"Sister-in-law, what should we do next?" Li Chao asked breathlessly, obviously exhausted.

"Go south, keep going south." Cheng Yuwei's eyes were firm. "Our rendezvous point is just ahead. As long as we hold on for a while longer, we'll be able to escape safely."

Zhang Qiang and Li Chao nodded, gritted their teeth and followed her, moving forward in the direction of hope without hesitation.

In the darkness of the night, the three figures gradually disappeared in the woods, leaving behind a silent mining area and the enemy searching everywhere.
