Chapter 303 - 35: Incident

Chapter 303 - 35: Incident

The light inside the glass cylinder grew increasingly dazzling, and the ethereal figure of his Second Self seemed to flicker within.

The intensity of the Radiant Light’s assault was perhaps not that high, but it was a constant, unrelenting embrace, eliminating all cover and blind spots, leaving him nowhere to hide, nowhere to run.

A sea of white filled Chen Chuan’s vision, and he felt the strange sensation of his entire body floating. There was no Biological Domain monitoring here, and no one outside could see what was happening, so he didn’t need to put on an act. But just sitting still felt like a waste of a whole Hour.

He thought for a moment, then decided to get up and practice his forms. The space was just about right. He hadn’t brought his Snow Monarch Blade with him, which made it awkward to practice the Saber Techniques he’d recently learned. In that case, he might as well practice the Orthodox Scattering Hand.

’Does this actually increase the absorption efficiency?’ he gradually realized as he started moving about in the chamber.

Although the improvement seemed slight, his mastery of the Breathing Method of Qi Breathing allowed him to clearly perceive the subtle changes in each of his Mutated Organizations. He could feel that they were indeed more active than before.

’In that case, I should definitely keep going.’

Enveloped by the light, he practiced the Orthodox Scattering Hand again and again. Before long, he felt his entire body grow hot. It was as if his Mutated Organizations were greedily devouring the light that seeped into him. Wisps of steam began to rise from his body, even though he wasn’t using the Furnace Breathing Method.

This forced him to stop. He grabbed the water bottle he had brought with him, downed half of it in one go, and then resumed his practice.

He was making the most of his time inside, but the medical staff waiting outside were growing uneasy. ’Is he ever coming out? Can this young man really last this long in one go?’

Someone spoke up. "He hasn’t passed out in there, has he?"

The medical personnel’s expressions grew grim.

It was a real possibility.

The Radiant Light irradiation process was so torturous that some people fainted while trying to endure it. But falling unconscious offered no protection—otherwise, people could just go in and knock themselves out from the start.

Once the person being irradiated fell unconscious, their Mutated Organizations would also enter a dormant state, becoming unable to absorb the Radiant Light. Further exposure would not only fail to bring benefits but would actually cause various malignant symptoms to develop. There had been one such case in the past.

But according to regulations, they were not allowed to enter and disturb the person undergoing the procedure before the time was up unless he came out on his own. All they could do was wait anxiously outside.

An Hour passed in the blink of an eye.

As Chen Chuan threw a punch, he suddenly heard a rhythmic tapping sound from a signal panel. He immediately knew his time was almost up.

’So soon?’

He felt it had ended too soon.

He slowly let out a breath and straightened his body. At the same time, the surrounding light began to fade, eventually disappearing completely.

He picked up his things, walked to the door, opened it, and stepped outside.

The medical personnel immediately crowded around him, their eyes fixed on him. Seeing the wisps of white steam still rising from his body and his slightly reddened skin, they knew he must have endured an intense ordeal.

But seeing how lucid he looked, they were stunned. ’He actually managed to endure it all?’

Especially considering it was his first time being exposed to Radiant Light. As they collectively breathed a sigh of relief, a sense of admiration grew within them. After all, cases like this were truly rare, and they were fortunate enough to witness one firsthand.

The head of the medical team looked him up and down. "Young man, how do you feel? Do you need us to run another check?"

Chen Chuan shook his head.

After confirming he was fine, the team leader stepped aside. "You can go back now, young man."

Chen Chuan nodded and left the area. He was met again by the stern-faced supervisor, who led him to an elevator and back to the upper level. After signing out at a registration desk, he finally walked out of the building.

Cao Guiqi was waiting for him outside. Upon seeing him, he asked, "Your first time receiving Radiant Light irradiation. What did it feel like?"

Chen Chuan could now clearly feel that his bones and fascia had been strengthened, so he replied, "It felt great."

Cao Guiqi looked surprised for a moment, but his expression was quickly replaced by a hint of melancholy and envy in his eyes. He didn’t press the matter, just said, "Let’s go, then."

Chen Chuan nodded and left with him. As he settled into the sedan, he glanced back at the building. ’It’s a shame opportunities like this are so rare,’ he thought. ’Even with the one from the Processing Bureau, that’s still only twice a month. Should I try to find a way to get more chances?’

On the way back, Cao Guiqi spoke. "Radiant Light is used to strengthen your bones and fascia. To strengthen your internal organs, however, you’ll need to ingest the Treasure Ointment produced by Celestial Hundred Herbs."

"I still have a share of twelve doses, but Celestial Hundred Herbs is extremely strict with its control over this medicine. I can only collect three doses a month at most. They’re of no use to me anymore, so I’ll give them to you as I get them."

He held up a hand. "No need to thank me. As I’ve said, this is just me repaying a favor to the Processing Bureau. However, during this time, since I’m responsible for instructing you, you can ask me about anything you don’t understand."

Chen Chuan nodded. After a moment of thought, he asked, "Senior Brother Cao, I’d like to ask: besides the ones provided by Wuyi Academy and the Processing Bureau, are there other places where one can find similar opportunities for this kind of irradiation and medicinal support?"

Cao Guiqi said, "Considering your situation, it’s unlikely unless you can get sponsored by a corporation—and I’m talking about the National Enterprises. Since you’ve already accepted the Processing Bureau’s sponsorship, only a National Enterprise would possibly give you another opportunity. But that’s just a slim possibility. It’s nearly impossible to actually make it happen."

"That’s because National Enterprises typically cultivate their own trusted Fighters, and they’ve likely already found suitable candidates at the various Wuyi Academies. It would only be possible if the person they sponsored met with some misfortune or accident, forcing them to find a replacement. But even then, they wouldn’t choose someone who’s already on another department’s radar."

"My advice is to try and vie for more opportunities within the Processing Bureau. The Bureau receives more than just one irradiation slot per month; they’re just evenly distributed among all sponsored trainees."

"The Processing Bureau conducts a monthly evaluation. The trainees with the lowest ratings will have their opportunities cut. If you can demonstrate sufficient value, it’s possible for you to earn an extra opportunity each month."

Chen Chuan’s mind raced. ’If that’s the case, then I’ll have to compete for it, even if it means I have to do more. But that’s fine. To get something, you have to give something. When you’re weak, you can’t be too concerned about the constraints. Once I’m strong enough, I’ll naturally be able to peel them off, layer by layer.’

The car drove on, reaching the outskirts of the central district half an hour later. Just then, Chen Chuan sensed something. Looking out from the overpass, he saw a fireball erupt from a distant building, followed moments later by the sound of an explosion.

At almost the exact same moment, a notification alert chimed from his Realm Token. "An explosion has occurred two kilometers to the southwest. Citizens are advised to steer clear."

And just a few seconds later, another voice sounded in his ear: "A violent assault has occurred near the ’Tao Wo Market,’ involving Fighter-related crime. Processing Bureau enforcement candidate Chen Chuan is detected as the closest agent to the incident. Temporary enforcement authority is hereby granted. Agent Chen, please proceed immediately to neutralize the criminal activity."

Upon hearing this, Chen Chuan looked up. "Senior Brother Cao, I’m afraid I have to get out of the car."

Cao Guiqi clearly understood. He said, "A notice from the Processing Bureau? That’s just a notification from the platform’s dormant Consciousness Body, not a mandatory order from the Bureau itself. You have the option not to go."

But Chen Chuan didn’t see it that way. He was still thinking about how to get more opportunities from the Processing Bureau. Now that a notification had arrived and he was right nearby, there was no reason not to go. He said, "I know, but I think I should."

Cao Guiqi gazed at him intently. After a moment, he instructed the driver, "Take the off-ramp ahead." Then he turned back to Chen Chuan, glanced at the Snow Monarch Blade beside him, and said, "You only brought your blade, right?" He then held out his hand to his butler. "Give me the gun."

The butler immediately opened the storage compartment between the seats and took out a handgun.

After taking it, Cao Guiqi handed it to Chen Chuan, complete with its exquisite, ornate holster. "This is a ’Thunder Shock’ produced by Longyin Company," he said. "It’s a gift."

Chen Chuan didn’t hesitate. With a word of thanks, he accepted it and tucked the gun into the waistband of his windbreaker. Then, right in front of Cao Guiqi, he took some pills. As soon as the car descended the overpass, the door opened. He bid Cao Guiqi farewell, grabbed his Snow Monarch Blade, and stepped out.

The moment he stepped out, a strong gust of wind swept over him. He pressed a hand to his fedora, took a deep breath, and broke into a sprint toward the incident location.

Uncle Ding watched his rapidly retreating back, observing that unhesitating posture. He remarked, "Young Master, that young man is a bit like you used to be."

Cao Guiqi grunted in acknowledgment. He clenched his flawless-looking hand into a fist, then instinctively covered it with his sleeve. "Let’s head back," he said. "He can handle it."

"Yes, Young Master."

As Chen Chuan ran, the Processing Bureau continuously fed new information to his Realm Token, primarily the attackers’ current location and their identities.

The initial estimate indicated four attackers, two of whom were Second Limit Fighters. Each one had been fitted with military-grade protective plating implants, and possessed reinforced skeletons as well as cardiopulmonary implants.

This type of Implant was a common choice among mercenaries, and he had encountered it before. However, judging from the model numbers being displayed, these were more advanced than any he had previously seen.

Currently, the attackers had not fled the scene. Instead, they had occupied the location and were in a standoff with the city patrol units that had rapidly arrived.

And as he sprinted, he could now feel that the flow between his movements and the exertion of his strength had become even smoother.

Clearly, the enhancement of his Mutated musculoskeletal fascia allowed him to erupt with greater power and supported swifter movements. Although the improvement was minimal for now, the process was continuous and would likely last for several days.

’If I can do this a few times every month, it will definitely strengthen my foundation significantly.’ He made a firm resolution. ’If another opportunity like this presents itself, I must find a way to seize it!’
